High Frequency/Sight Words

Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
Goals:
First Grade students will practice and recognize High Frequency/Sight Words using Drill-and-Practice and Instructional Game software so that they will be able to recognize and use High Frequency/Sight Words in their reading and writing.

Learning Activities:
This lesson can be used several times throughout the year with different words practiced and added to the apps. As more words get added, then the words used for the Jeopardy Rocks game will need to be updated too.
Students will receive immediate feedback when playing the Jeopardy Rocks game. Since the goal for this lesson is for the students to recognize and use High Frequency/Sight Words in their reading and writing, there is no particular assessment at the end of this lesson. Each student will be assessed at the end of the quarter on reading and recognizing High Frequency/Sight Words. The ability to spell them correctly in their writing, is also part of their writing grade under conventions. Participation from all students is of high importance.

Materials:
- Each student will need a device (Kindle, iPad, etc.) with High Frequency/Sight Words Apps downloaded on them.
- Drill-and-Practice Apps: Sight Word Learning Games, Phonics Spelling and Sight Words, Sight Words: Phonics Bug
- A teacher computer with the Instructional Games software Jeopardy Rocks
- An interactive whiteboard, SmartBoard, or Promethean Board
Learning Activities:
This lesson can be used several times throughout the year with different words practiced and added to the apps. As more words get added, then the words used for the Jeopardy Rocks game will need to be updated too.
- Each student will need to have their device at their desk/table with them.
- Have students open a High Frequency/Sight Words app of their choice. There will be several different High Frequency/Sight Word apps for students to choose from.
- Student will spend 10-15 minutes practicing High Frequency/Sight Words.
- Once the time is up, have students turn their device off and put it away.
- The teacher will turn on (the already created) Jeopardy Rocks game on the teacher computer with it being projected on the SmartBoard.
- The teacher will put the students into groups. These can be smaller groups or the class can be divided in half. This is completely up to the teacher.
- Students will play the Jeopardy Rocks game reviewing High Frequency/Sight Words.
