Social Networking and Community Building
The following activities are completely unrelated. These activities are different ways to communicate and collaborate with other students outside of their own classroom.
Activity #1 - What is a Gruffalo?
For this activity, another class either from the same school or another school, will do the same activity. The students will watch the following VoiceThread to begin this activity.
For this activity, another class either from the same school or another school, will do the same activity. The students will watch the following VoiceThread to begin this activity.
After the students watch the VoiceThread, give students time to draw a picture of what they think a Gruffalo looks like. They also need to describe their Gruffalo in 1-2 sentences along with predicting if it is mean or nice. Once the students have completed, the teacher can take a picture of each students drawing and add it the VoiceThread. The students can either record their description and prediction about the Gruffalo and add it to the VoiceThread, or the students can each type their response in comment form directly on the VoiceThread. Once all of the pictures and comments are added, both classes can now comment on work from the other participating class. Again, this can be done through a recording of their comment or a typed response.
Activity #2 - Chain Writing
For this activity, the teacher will arrange to work with another class either at the same school or another school. Both classes (at the same time) will sign in to Primary Pad and display the screen on the board. Both classes will be set up the same way and give the same directions. The students will be split into groups of 3 or 4. Each group will have access to a device that is also signed into Primary Pad. The teacher will start the first sentence and tell the first group they will come up with the next sentence and type it on the pad. Each classroom takes turns as well as the groups. By the end of the activity, they will have created a complete story.
Activity #3 - Getting to Know You
For this activity, the students will need to sign in to Wikispaces. Again, they will be setup with another class. Each student will open the discussion board.
They will need to answer the following questions so both classes can get to know each other a little better:
What is your name?
How old are you?
What is your favorite color?
What is your favorite food?
What is your favorite thing to do?
This will open communication lines for future communication and collaboration.
